The Scotland Regional Group offers up to ten SCI student memberships to PhD and Masters degree students working in scientific research in Scottish Universities, to help with networking and professional development opportunities.  Once a year applicants are requested to submit a 600-word article describing their research project and its relevance to the SCI strapline ‘where science meets business’.  The award is one year’s complimentary membership of SCI and benefits.

Jessica Gomez-Banderas provided an essay on “Using the chemical defences of sea creatures to stop biofouling of immersed structures” and was selected as a winner for the SCI Group Essay competition.   As part of her prize her article was published on their website.

At the end of 2020 I was chosen as one of the winners of the SCI Scotland Group Essay competition which brought a lot of positivity and motivation moving forwards into 2021 after a very tough year. As part of the competition, I wrote an article explaining the important ties that my PhD project has with industry and I was extremely excited to see my article published in January's issue of the C&I magazine. It's really great to have this opportunity to communicate my work in this way and I hope that more opportunities like this arise in the future!
